On February 21, Alpha Lau, Director-General of Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK), visited Seoul and held a small-scale media roundtable
to discuss opportunities for Korean companies to expand into Hong Kong and broader collaboration between the two markets.
Mr. Young Ho Seo, Principal Consultant of InvestHK Korea Office and CEO of GBP, also attended the event and participated in consultations and networking
aimed at strengthening business cooperation between Korea and Hong Kong.
Director-General Lau emphasized, “Hong Kong is a global business hub equipped with world-class financial, logistics, and legal infrastructure. It is the most strategic location for companies looking to expand into the Asian market.” She added that Hong Kong’s legal system, rooted in common law,
and its free exchange policies offer an exceptionally favorable environment for foreign companies.
In 2023, Hong Kong saw a record-breaking year in foreign direct investment (FDI), with 539 overseas and Mainland Chinese companies
either newly establishing a presence or expanding their businesses in the region. The Hong Kong government continues to enhance
its global investment appeal through tax flexibility, regulatory simplification, and streamlined business registration procedures.
In addition, Hong Kong is actively rolling out policies to attract global high-net-worth individuals and family offices.
As of 2023, more than 2,700 single family offices (SFOs) are operating in Hong Kong.
With its strong financial infrastructure and global connectivity, the city provides an ideal environment for wealth protection and intergenerational wealth transfer.
Director-General Lau also highlighted, “The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is one of the most active IPO markets in Asia, and approximately 28% of Hong Kong’s 4,700 startups are foreign-founded.” She further noted that Korean companies have abundant opportunities for fundraising, partnerships, and investment immigration.
As such, Hong Kong is solidifying its position not only as a leading financial hub, but also as a strategic business gateway connecting Asia and the world. Amid a rapidly changing global landscape, it is hoped that Korean companies will seize this opportunity to leverage Hong Kong as a launchpad for their global expansion.
